Have you ever heard the whispers of “mairy poranga”? In the heart of São Paulo state lies Mairiporã, a name whispered on the wind, meaning “beautiful city.” Mairiporã isn’t just a name. It’s a promise. A promise of breathtaking landscapes, a vibrant history, and a spirit of adventure. Right here, at the edge of the Serra da Cantareira, you stand on the threshold of a city sculpted by time and nature. Mairiporã began its life in the early 17th century as the humble village of Juquery, named after a local plant. This small settlement served as a protective outpost for São Paulo, a vital link to the interior. Imagine the creak of wooden wagons and the clatter of hooves as tropeiros, those intrepid pioneers, passed through on their way to Minas Gerais. In 1696, Juquery blossomed into Vila de Nossa Senhora do Desterro de Juqueri, a name that speaks to a history of faith and resilience. Throughout the 18th century, Juquery flourished as an agricultural hub, supplying São Paulo with everything from cotton to wine. A road, the “Caminho de Juqueri,” later known as Estrada Velha de Bragança, connected this burgeoning village to the growing city. By 1889, it had become a municipality in its own right. But the name Juquery carried a heavy burden. Associated with the nearby psychiatric hospital, the town’s name became synonymous with “madness.” In 1948, the people of Juquery, tired of this stigma, rallied for change. Aided by the support of Ulysses Guimarães, who famously declared, “Juqueri, land of crazy people. Crazy for citizenship!”, the town was renamed Mairiporã. This act of self-determination marked a turning point in the city’s history, a reclaiming of its identity. Today, Mairiporã is a vibrant municipality, a testament to its rich past. From the highest point, Pico do Olho D’Água, to the tranquil waters of Represa Paulo de Paiva Castro, Mairiporã offers a diverse tapestry of experiences. The Cantareira State Park, a vital part of São Paulo’s water supply, lies within its boundaries, a testament to its natural beauty. For those seeking adventure, Mairiporã offers paragliding, downhill trails, and waterfalls nestled amidst lush greenery. The city even has its own unique history with Japanese immigration, one of the oldest colonies in Brazil, adding another layer to its cultural richness. Mairiporã is a city where history and nature intertwine. It’s a city that has embraced change and emerged stronger, more vibrant. It’s a city that truly lives up to its name, Mairiporã, the beautiful city.
