Opened in 1988 Centreville High School stands proudly. It serves the Clifton Centreville region. This impressive school initially faced challenges. Funding was delayed. The planned intermediate school became a high school. Unexpected asbestos contamination halted construction. The school board selected Centreville as its name. This caused controversy. Some considered Centreville a less affluent area than Clifton. Despite these hurdles Centreville High School opened. It welcomed over 1000 seventh to tenth graders. Over time the school transitioned to grades nine through twelve.
Today Centreville High School thrives. It boasts a diverse student body. Students represent 84 different countries. In the 2023-24 school year its demographics were notable. 31.26% of students were White 31.39% Asian 23.45% Hispanic 8.10% Black and 5.80% Other. This rich tapestry of backgrounds reflects the school’s commitment to inclusion. A Washington Post columnist highlighted this diversity. Centreville’s diversity became a symbol of racial and ethnic tolerance.
Centreville’s academic programs excel. It’s known for its advanced technology. The school has six computer labs plus departmental wireless labs. Every room including the cafeteria has internet access. The school’s website won an award. It was named Fairfax County Public School’s Website of the Year. The website showcased current web technologies. It included Javascript Ajax Flash and numerous Google apps.
Beyond academics Centreville has a vibrant arts program. Its theatre program won state championships. It also represented Virginia at the Southeastern Theater Conference. The Centreville Chorus Department offers diverse ensembles. These include Men’s and Women’s Ensembles Concert Choir Bella Voce Symphonic Choir and the Madrigal Ensemble. The school also has a successful athletics program. It competes in 28 different sports. The school’s large stadium named after its first principal William E. Trussel Jr holds approximately 7000 spectators. Centreville High School is a place of achievement and diversity. It’s a testament to the power of education and community.
