Can you hear the faint echoes of fervent prayers? They seem to linger in the very air around Igreja Sitio Aparecida. This church named after Our Lady Aparecida stands as a testament to faith and devotion. Our Lady Aparecida is Brazil’s principal patroness. This modest church probably shares in the rich history associated with its namesake.
The story of Our Lady Aparecida begins in 1717. Three fishermen struggled to catch fish in the Paraíba River. They needed a large catch for a banquet honoring São Paulo Governor Pedro de Almeida. Despite their efforts they caught nothing. Then one fisherman cast his net and pulled up a statue of the Virgin Mary. He cast again and found the statue’s head.
The fishermen cleaned the statue and wrapped it in cloth. They returned to their task and their luck changed. They caught all the fish they needed. The statue is believed to be the work of Frei Agostino de Jesus a monk from São Paulo.
The statue was first housed in the home of Felipe Pedroso. He was one of the fishermen. His home became a popular place for visitors to pray to the statue. Pedroso’s family built a small chapel to house the statue. Later a larger chapel replaced it.
Over time the devotion to Our Lady Aparecida grew. People attributed many miracles to her. In 1930 Pope Pius XI declared Our Lady Aparecida the Patroness of Brazil. The feast day of Our Lady Aparecida is celebrated on October 12. Since 1980 it is a public holiday in Brazil.
The Basilica of Our Lady of Aparecida is the largest Marian temple. It is the second largest Basilica in the world. Only St Peter’s in the Vatican City is bigger. The Basilica can hold up to 45000 worshippers.
Three Popes have visited the Basilica of Our Lady of Aparecida. Pope John Paul II consecrated the new shrine in 1980. Pope Benedict XVI visited in 2007. He awarded the shrine a Golden Rose. Pope Francis celebrated Mass there in 2013.
The image of Our Lady Aparecida has received the Golden Rose three times. Pope Paul VI gave the first in 1967. Pope Benedict XVI blessed the second in 2007. Pope Francis gave the third in 2017.
