Who was the boy from the Salsk Steppes? Here, at the Igor Newerly Stone, we unravel that mystery. This stone commemorates a man of resilience, Igor Newerly, a writer and educator deeply connected to Warsaw. Born Igor Abramow-Newerly in 1903, his life was a tapestry woven with threads of adventure, hardship, and unwavering dedication to social causes. Newerly’s childhood, marked by the loss of a leg and the turmoil of revolutionary Russia, inspired his renowned novel “Chłopiec z Salskich Stepów” (Boy from the Salsk Steppes). The novel captures the spirit of those tumultuous times. In Warsaw, Newerly found his place. He became secretary to the celebrated pedagogue Janusz Korczak, a relationship that profoundly shaped his life. He edited “Mały Przegląd” (Little Review), a children’s newspaper, until the outbreak of World War II. Newerly’s bravery extended to the Polish resistance during the Nazi occupation. He protected Jewish colleagues. Tragically, the Gestapo arrested him in 1943. He endured the horrors of Majdanek, Auschwitz, Oranienburg, and Bergen-Belsen. Yet, his spirit remained unbroken. After the war, Newerly returned to Warsaw. He co-founded the Korczak Committee, honoring his mentor’s legacy. His novel “Pamiątka z Celulozy” (A Souvenir from the Cellulose Mill) became a socialist realism classic. Later, his views evolved, and his final work, “Zostało z uczty bogów” (What’s Left of the Feast of the Gods), remained unpublished officially in Poland for years. The Igor Newerly Stone stands as a testament to his indomitable spirit. It reminds us of his journey from the Salsk Steppes to the heart of Warsaw, a city he embraced. It’s a reminder of his contribution to Polish literature. It’s a whisper of a life lived with courage, compassion, and a deep commitment to social justice.
