Can you imagine a courthouse rising from ashes, not once, not twice, but three times? This is the story of the Calvert County Courthouse. Here in Prince Frederick, this brick building holds within its walls centuries of Calvert County’s legal history. The original courthouse wasn’t here, but in a town called Battle Town, established in 1654. By 1669, a courthouse existed there. Years passed, and in 1725, the county seat shifted to William’s Old Field, later renamed Prince Frederick Town. Construction on the first courthouse here began around 1731. However, disaster struck in 1748. Fire consumed the courthouse, necessitating a second one, authorized in 1749. This second courthouse also met a fiery end, along with most of Prince Frederick, in a devastating fire in 1882. Imagine the loss of vital records and the disruption to the legal system. Undeterred, Calvert County built its fourth courthouse in 1884. Yet, the need for a larger, more modern facility led to the construction of the fifth courthouse, completed in 1916, the one we stand before today. This building, with its hipped roof and two stories, has witnessed countless trials, legal battles, and the evolution of Calvert County’s justice system. From land disputes to teacher salary discrimination cases, the Calvert County Courthouse has been a silent observer of the county’s history. The current Calvert County Courthouse stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of the community, a symbol of justice reborn from the ashes.
