Who was Artur Francuz you ask? This plaque commemorates a remarkable man. He wasn’t just any officer. Artur Francuz served in the Polish Government Protection Bureau BOR. He was more than just a bodyguard though. He was the aide-de-camp and driver for Ryszard Kaczorowski. Kaczorowski was the last president of Poland in exile.

Artur Francuz’s role went beyond logistics. He provided security for President Kaczorowski during his visits to Poland. He was a trusted confidant responsible for the president’s safety. He even served as his personal driver. Their bond was exceptionally strong. They shared many trips together. Their final journey was tragically cut short.

Artur Francuz perished in the 2010 Smolensk air disaster. The plane crashed while en route to the Katyn Forest. It was the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre. This event left a nation in mourning. He left behind a wife and two children Ola and Marcin. His loss was deeply felt.

After his death Artur Francuz received posthumous recognition. He was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta. He was also honored with the Honorary Badge of the BOR. President Bronisław Komorowski posthumously promoted him to the rank of second lieutenant. A fitting tribute for a dedicated officer.

Many remember Artur Francuz fondly. People in Michałowice near Warsaw remember him warmly. His passion for cars and military history particularly World War II history was well known. His colleagues nicknamed him “the Spaniard”. His passion was infectious. He was a man of many interests. His passion for motor vehicles continued even shortly before the accident. He had bought a scooter right before flying to Smolensk.
