High on the hills of Tai Shui Hang, overlooking the waters between Mui Wo and Discovery Bay, sits the Trappist Haven Monastery. This tranquil sanctuary, also known as Our Lady of Joy Abbey, offers a glimpse into Hong Kong’s rich Catholic heritage. The Trappist Haven Monastery isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to resilience, a story etched in history, and a surprising contributor to Hong Kong’s dairy industry. The Trappist monks, belonging to the Cistercian Order of the Strict Observance, found their way to this serene location after a tumultuous journey. Fleeing the Chinese Civil War in the late 1940s, these Chinese monks sought refuge in Hong Kong. They established the Trappist Haven Monastery in 1956, bringing with them a tradition of prayer, work, and self-sufficiency. As you approach the monastery, perhaps after a ferry ride and a scenic walk, you’ll notice the imposing gates. The inscription above, “Pax intrantibus” (Peace to those who enter), sets the tone for the tranquil experience within. A unique blend of East and West greets you in the courtyard. A Chinese pagoda stands as a reminder of the monks’ origins, while a nativity scene centers around Mary. This fusion reflects the monastery’s multicultural identity, where Mandarin is still used in prayer. The church itself embodies the monks’ frugal lifestyle. Its simple white walls and modest benches create a serene space for prayer. Less than 20 monks reside here, continuing the traditions of their order. One notable former resident was Father Nicholas Kao Se Tseien, who lived an extraordinary life spanning three centuries and ten popes. He passed away in 2007 at the age of 110 and is buried in the monastery’s graveyard. The Trappist Haven Monastery is perhaps best known for its connection to Trappist Dairy. In the early days, the monks established a dairy farm, contributing to Hong Kong’s local milk production. While the company has since been sold and production moved, the Trappist Dairy brand remains a beloved local favorite. Although access to the monastery grounds may be limited at times, the Trappist Haven Monastery’s history and serene presence make it a worthwhile destination. It offers a peaceful retreat and a unique story of faith, resilience, and the unexpected legacy of “priest milk.”
