Sydney Secondary College Leichhardt Campus was established in 2002. It formed from the amalgamation of several schools. Leichhardt High School, Balmain High School and Glebe High School combined. This created a larger and more diverse learning environment.

Before 2002, this campus was Leichhardt High School. It was founded in 1972 as a co-educational school. The area had many migrant families, especially from the Mediterranean. The school became known for its cultural diversity. It received funding to support students from non-English speaking backgrounds.

Declining enrolments led to the creation of Sydney Secondary College. The college includes multiple campuses. This model also includes Northern Beaches Secondary College and Georges River College. In its first year, the college had 1800 students. This was up from 1250 in 2003.

In 2003, Sydney Secondary College received an Excellence Award. The award recognized its promotion of public education. From 2011, the school partnered with Balmain Campus and Georges River College. This was part of the Smarter Schools National Partnership.

The Leichhardt Council proposed a performing arts center. It would be housed in two heritage tramway buildings next to the school. The school supports this handover. However, the government has not granted access.

Sport is a strong focus at Sydney Secondary College. The three campuses hold annual carnivals. These include swimming, cross country and athletics. Top athletes compete against other schools in the Bligh Zone.

The college has four sporting houses. They are named after local sporting heroes. These are Stewart, Pearce, Woods and Sauvage. Sydney Secondary College Leichhardt Campus has a unique facility. It is a property called Lostock. Lostock is located 60 kilometers north of Maitland. It lies along the Paterson River. The property is used for school excursions and camps. Families of staff and students can use it as a weekender. Lostock is home to diverse wildlife. Wombats and platypus live there.
