Beneath the surface of youthful energy surrounding us here at Nikaido High School lies a story connected to ancient temples and powerful figures. This isn’t just another high school in Tokyo. Nikaido High School carries a name with echoes of Japan’s feudal past.

Nikaido’s name comes from the administrative unit of Kamakura. Kamakura is a city southwest of Tokyo. The area used to be called Higashi Mikado.

But where does the name Nikaido come from? Let’s travel back to the late 12th century. After wars, shōgun Minamoto no Yoritomo founded a temple. This temple was named Yōfuku-ji. He wanted to comfort the souls of dead samurai.

Yōfuku-ji’s main hall was a two-story building. It was called Nikaidō. Yoritomo admired a similar building. It was Chuson-ji’s Daichō-in Nikaidō in Hiraizumi. The story goes that the hall gave its name to the entire area. Another theory suggests the name came from the Nikaidō clan. They were important vassals of the Minamoto. Their mansion stood here.

Yōfuku-ji became a large temple with many pavilions and a lake. Yoritomo, his wife Hōjō Masako, and their family often visited. They liked spending time there. Sadly, the temple no longer exists. It disappeared from records after burning down in 1405. The city of Kamakura plans to create a historical park on the site.

So, as students pass through the halls of Nikaido High School, remember the name. It connects them to shōguns, temples, and the very foundations of Kamakura. The area’s rich history remains. It is a reminder that even modern institutions can have deep roots.
