Hidden amongst the bushland 39 kilometres north of Sydney’s bustling centre lies Berowra Heights. This tranquil suburb. It’s a place where the echoes of Aboriginal history blend with the sounds of modern life.

Berowra itself means ‘place of many shells’. This reflects the area’s rich Indigenous past. Imagine the ancient Darug people. They left behind countless shell middens. These are testaments to their lives along Berowra Creek. Berowra Heights shares this history.

Established in 1887 Berowra Heights saw its post office open much later. This didn’t happen until 2 September 1968. The suburb quietly grew. It developed around the main roads and bushland. Today Berowra Heights is home to over 5000 residents. They are a diverse group. Many were born in Australia. Others come from England New Zealand China South Africa and the Philippines.

The area boasts a thriving commercial centre. It includes the Village Green and Berowra Marketplace. Residents enjoy easy access to essential services. These include Coles and Bendigo Bank. There are also pharmacies and a medical centre. A variety of restaurants cater to every taste.

Families are well-served by two primary schools. Wideview Public School and St Bernard’s Catholic Primary School educate the younger residents. Older students attend high schools in neighbouring areas. This is because Berowra Heights does not have a high school of its own.

Berowra Heights is not immune to the challenges of its location. Bushfires are a real threat. Fire and Rescue NSW and the NSW Rural Fire Service work together to protect the area. The Berowra Rural Fire Brigade plays a vital role. They operate from new premises opened in 2018.

The peaceful atmosphere of Berowra Heights is a juxtaposition. It contrasts sharply with the busy life of Sydney. Yet it’s only a short drive away. It’s a place where the serenity of nature and the convenience of city life coexist. Berowra Heights. A hidden gem in the heart of Northern Sydney. A suburb with a rich history and a bright future.
