Established in 1874 the Niiza City Katayama Elementary School boasts a rich history. This isn’t just any school. It’s a cornerstone of the community. Its story is woven into the fabric of Niiza City itself.

Initially known as Kurome Elementary School it opened its doors in 1874. The school was located within the grounds of Daiheiyama Hosshoji Temple. It was a humble beginning. A testament to the community’s dedication to education.

Over the years the school’s name changed several times. It became Nukafuchi Elementary School then Tomonou Elementary School. Each name reflects a shift in the area’s administrative boundaries. The changes also mark the growth of the school itself.

In 1885 three neighboring villages merged. This led to the creation of a branch school under the Kurome Elementary School umbrella. In 1886 the school was renamed Tomonou Elementary School. This renaming marked the expanding influence and importance of the Katayama area.

In 1889 further changes occurred. The unified village system was abolished. The school once again changed its name. This time it became Kurome Village Elementary School. This signified the re-establishment of village autonomy. It also reflected a renewed focus on local education initiatives.

By 1903 the school had expanded its curriculum. It offered a full six-year education. It was renamed Kurome Village Higher Elementary School marking this significant milestone. The school continued to evolve and grow.

In 1908 the name changed again. It became Katayama Village Higher Elementary School. This reflected the growing prominence of the Katayama area. The name change signifies its continued development.

The impact of wartime led to another name change. In 1941 it became Katayama National School under the influence of national policies. It demonstrates the strong influence of the country’s policies.

Post-war reforms brought another shift. In 1947 following the implementation of the new education law. The school was again renamed Katayama Elementary School. This change represents the post-war reconstruction. It highlights a return to local control over education.

Finally in 1955 Niiza Town was formed. This resulted in the current name Niiza City Katayama Elementary School. This most recent name change marks its place in the modern era. It remains a vital part of Niiza City.

Today the Niiza City Katayama Elementary School stands as a testament to resilience and progress. It’s a place where generations have learned and grown. It’s a symbol of the enduring spirit of the community. It’s a place worthy of your visit.
