Imagine a modest hall transformed. It became a spiritual haven for displaced souls. This is the story of Sankt Maria Königin der Apostel in Weimar. It stands as a testament to faith and resilience.

Following World War II Oberweimar saw an influx of Catholic refugees. They came from former German territories. The existing church in Weimar was insufficient. The need for a dedicated space grew urgent. A local inn’s festival hall offered a solution.

In 1947 the hall was converted into a community and worship center. It served as a place of solace. On November 21 1950 the makeshift church received its name. It became known as “Apostelkönigin Maria”. This translates to Mary Queen of the Apostles. Pallottine Order members provided pastoral care. They guided the growing community.

After the reunification of Germany in 1989 a desire for a proper church emerged. The expansion of an existing hall accelerated its realization. The foundation stone was laid on Assumption Day in 1996. Bishop Joachim Wanke consecrated the completed Sankt Maria Königin der Apostel on October 27 1996. This marked a new chapter for the Catholic community in Oberweimar.

The architectural design is striking. Weimar architect Ulrich Junk created the modern concrete structure. Its bright interior welcomes visitors. The roof rests on ten pillars symbolizing strength. The walls stand freely allowing light to permeate the space.

Natural light floods the interior through skylights. They are placed on the right and left sides. The altar tabernacle and pulpit are crafted from Italian travertine. They rest on metal foundations. The Lindner workshops in Erfurt supplied the new tabernacle.

Today Sankt Maria Königin der Apostel is a branch church. It belongs to the Herz Jesu Weimar parish. The Catholic Parish Office Herz Jesu manages its administration. It also provides pastoral care.

Sankt Maria Königin der Apostel stands as a symbol of hope. It reflects the community’s unwavering spirit. From humble beginnings in a converted hall to its current architectural form. It remains a vital center of faith. It is a welcoming space for all in Oberweimar. It embodies the enduring legacy.
