Originally commissioned in 1998 as a Preliminary Sewage Treatment Works it was upgraded in 2004 to handle chemically enhanced primary treatment. It serves a population of 200000 people in the bustling areas of Chek Lap Kok Airport Tung Chung Discovery Bay and even Disneyland.
But the real story lies in its remarkable solar farm. Commissioned in 2016 this massive solar array boasts over 4200 photovoltaic panels. It’s the largest solar farm amongst all government facilities in Hong Kong. Spread across 11000 square meters it’s divided into three sections. Each section is meticulously designed. An intelligent detection system ensures that faulty panels are identified quickly keeping efficiency high.
Think about it. This sewage treatment plant isn’t just cleaning waste. It’s generating enough clean energy to power roughly 230 homes annually. That’s a significant reduction in carbon emissions around 770 tons a year.

It’s a testament to Hong Kong’s commitment to sustainable development. The Drainage Services Department actively promotes renewable energy technologies. They’ve really gone above and beyond.
The plant’s design is also impressive. The sewage undergoes preliminary treatment. Large solids grit and sand are removed before sedimentation. Chemicals are added for enhanced treatment. Sludge and scum are collected and dewatered. The treated effluent is disinfected before being discharged into the sea. Even the used UV lamps are recycled. An odour management system minimizes unpleasant smells ensuring that the surrounding community isn’t negatively affected. This advanced system which includes biotrickling filters removes nearly all hydrogen sulphide gas.
