A pivotal moment arrived in 1977. Peter and Irene Ludwig German industrialists and passionate art collectors organized an exhibition in Vienna. This donation of over 230 works significantly enriched the mumok. The donation of 158 works of art in 1981 officially led to the name change to Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien. Another major donation came in 1991 marking the tenth anniversary of the Austrian Ludwig Foundation.
The current building designed by Ortner & Ortner opened in 2001. It’s a striking architectural achievement. This building perfectly showcases the museum’s impressive collection.
