Rock Davis a local shipbuilder used the hill for a very practical purpose. He employed a watchman. The watchman’s job was to spot incoming ships. These ships were bound for the Rock Davis shipyard. The shipyard thrived in Blackwall between 1862 and 1913. Over 120 wooden-hulled vessels were built there. Among the most famous were the Vaucluse ferry and the coastal steamer Belbowrie.
Davis named this spot Blackwall after the famous shipbuilding center in London. The name stuck. Today Blackwall Mount Lookout is part of Kitchener Reserve. The reserve offers walking trails. These trails wind through bushland leading to the lookout. From there you can see Ettalong Wagstaffe Lion Island and even Barrenjoey Head in the distance. It’s a popular spot for bushwalking and mountain biking. You can even access several informal trails from the top of Blackwall Mountain.
The lookout itself is easy to find. A fenced platform gives you a safe place to enjoy the view. There are other less obvious rock platforms along the trails. These also offer exceptional vistas. Another less-known spot is informally called the Rip Lookout. It’s located at the end of a trail. This lookout provides views similar to Blackwall Mount Lookout itself. It’s a testament to the area’s beauty that multiple viewpoints offer such amazing panoramas. Blackwall Mount Lookout isn’t just a place to see the scenery.
