Have you considered the journey of the 2 Warszawska Dywizja Piechoty im Henryka Dąbrowskiego? It stood as one of the initial divisions of the Polish Army.
Formed in the USSR, the 2nd Warsaw Infantry Division emerged by order of the Commander. This order came from the 1st Corps of the Polish Armed Forces in the USSR on August 19 1943. The designated location for its creation was the Sielce area. Henryk Dąbrowski became the patron. Soldiers took a solemn military oath in November 1943. The 2nd company of riflemen joined the division in December 1943.
As early as January 2 1944 the soldiers of the 2nd Warsaw Infantry Division set out for the front. In May 1944 the 2nd independent anti-tank squadron was disbanded. A new unit emerged. It was the 2nd self-propelled artillery squadron SU-76. In July 1944, the 2nd Warsaw Infantry Division reached Chełm. It then participated in battles on the Vistula River and in Warsaw. The division fought in Pomerania during February and March 1945. In April 1945 it crossed the Oder River. In early May 1945 the 2nd Warsaw Infantry Division reached the Elbe. The division received the distinguishing name “Warszawska” for its participation in the battles for Warsaw. The 5th Infantry Regiment received the distinguishing name “Kołobrzeski”.
From May to July 1945 the division served in Germany. It was under the command of the Commander of the Group of Soviet Occupation Forces. The division returned to Poland in early July 1945. It then served to protect the border. This protection spanned from Cieszyn to Paczków. The division guarded the border until September 1945.
After returning from the border, the division was subordinated to the Commander of the Łódź Military District. Simultaneously, the entire division was relocated deep into the country. This relocation was in the Kielce and Częstochowa region. Some of the division’s units were then disbanded. By November 15 1945 the 2nd Warsaw Infantry Division was reorganized. It shifted to peacetime staffing.
In 1946, the division’s structure changed. A car platoon was integrated into the 2nd Infantry Division Headquarters. The 2nd self-propelled artillery squadron became the 2nd anti-tank artillery squadron. The 2nd light artillery regiment became the 18th communications company. The Information Department of the 2nd Infantry Division became the Information Department of the 2nd Infantry Division. By the end of April 1946, a 4-digit numbering system for military units was introduced. The 5th Kołobrzeski Infantry Regiment moved to Piotrków Trybunalski in July 1946. In November 1946, the 2nd Infantry Division transferred to the Lublin Military District No VII. This transfer occurred due to the disbandment of the Łódź Military District. In April 1947, the 5th Kołobrzeski Infantry Regiment assisted in the fight against UPA units.
The 2nd Warsaw Infantry Division’s journey tells a tale of transformation adaptation and unwavering service.
