A diverse community. That’s the vision of Takoma Park Middle School. Right here in Silver Spring Maryland this school thrives. It serves students from grades 6 through 8. Many are local. Others come from all over the county for the magnet program. This program focuses on math science and computer science. Students must test in and apply in 5th grade. Local kids can participate too. Three of their eight classes are magnet classes. The rest are integrated with the wider student body.
Takoma Park Middle School also offers specialized programs. There are programs for students new to the country. There’s also support for English language learners. These students may have ESOL teachers for some or most of their classes. The school day is busy. Students have a different teacher for each subject. They must keep track of all their assignments. It’s a big change from elementary school. Many are entering this new stage of their educational journeys.
Seventh grade is exciting. It’s the first year for interscholastic sports. Girls and boys can try out for softball basketball soccer cross-country and track. They need a GPA above 2.0 to participate. They also need to complete health forms and pay a fee. The teams compete against other schools in the county. Practices happen after school.
Eighth grade brings new challenges. It’s time to think about high school. Students choose a school within the Downcounty Consortium. This includes Montgomery Blair Einstein Wheaton Kennedy and Northwood High Schools. This consortium expands student opportunities. Students should explore programs that interest them. High school IB and magnet programs need attention too.
The Parent Teacher Student Association or PTSA is essential. It provides parents teachers and students a way to connect. It supports students’ education health and well-being. The PTSA’s mission is to help every child reach their full potential. It engages families and communities to advocate for every student. It sponsors social activities like Books and Basketball and International Night. It raises funds and provides treats for staff. It organizes volunteers and produces a phone directory. It’s an active community striving to shape young minds. Takoma Park Middle School truly is a place where students grow and excel. The supportive environment makes a difference. This is a school committed to its students’ success.
