A church built of stone, in the shape of a cross. This is Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church. It stands proudly on Queen Street East in Toronto’s Beach Triangle neighbourhood. Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church has witnessed a century of joys, sorrows, and even a bit of drama. Let’s step back in time to 1927. Picture the newly constructed church, designed by architect John Gibb Morton in the Romanesque Revival style. The beautiful Credit Valley stone gleamed. The church could accommodate 900 parishioners. It cost approximately $200,000 to build, a considerable sum back then. Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church quickly became the heart of the community. It offered solace and a place for gathering. However, the church’s history hasn’t been without its trials. In 1943, a fire, likely set by thieves who had stolen from the poor boxes, ravaged the vestibule, organ, choir gallery, and ceiling. The community rallied, and Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church was restored. Tragedy struck again in 1975 when another fire, deliberately set, destroyed the main altar. Once again, the church was rebuilt, a testament to the resilience of the community. In 1977, a stunning tabernacle mural by William Kurelek, depicting the first parish picnic, was installed. This artwork became a symbol of the church’s renewed spirit. Even amidst these challenges, Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church has remained a steadfast presence. It continues to serve its community. In 1973, it received heritage status from the City of Toronto. This designation acknowledges its architectural and historical significance. As you stand before Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church today, take a moment to appreciate its journey. It’s a story of faith, perseverance, and community spirit.
