“I am from Heaven” These words greet you at the entrance to Our Lady of Fatima Shrine. This isn’t just any church. This is a place steeped in history and devotion. Our Lady of Fatima Shrine stands tall in Scarborough a Roman Catholic parish within the Archdiocese of Toronto.
It all began with a deep devotion. Father Kenneth McDonnell the first pastor held a profound love for Our Lady. He named the parish in her honor. After his passing Father W Vincent Egan continued this legacy. He built the magnificent structure we see before us today.
Look closely. Notice the imported marble from Italy. The stained glass windows are French masterpieces. Even the sculptures depicting the Lord’s passion are carved from Linden wood. Life-sized statues of the three shepherd children Jacinta Francisco and Lucia add to the ambiance. These statues were brought all the way from Portugal.
The church’s history isn’t always a tale of grandeur. Early days were humble. There was no school. Mass was held in various locations for the original 400 families. A small wooden church once stood where the parking lot now resides. As the community grew to 1300 families a modern stone structure was needed. A cornerstone was unveiled in 1960 commemorating the 43rd anniversary of the first Fatima apparition.
The community spirit was strong even then. Men formed the Holy Name Society. They held meetings breakfasts and fundraisers. Today’s Knights of Columbus continue similar work. The women’s league organized events and cared for the church. Bowling leagues and youth groups flourished adding to the rich tapestry of community life.
The Carmelites arrived in 2007 ministering to the faithful. Their presence brought a devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. This adds another layer of significance to the shrine. Remember Mother Mary’s request in one of her last apparitions at Fatima? She asked the children to wear the brown scapular and encourage others. She even appeared wearing one.
Today the parish is a vibrant mix of cultures reflecting the diversity of Toronto. The altar servers enthusiastically carry on traditions. The quiet words at the shrine entrance inspire hope and faith. Our Lady of Fatima Shrine stands as a testament to enduring faith a place where prayers are answered and community thrives. It’s a place to pray to reflect and to feel the presence of faith.
