“Symmetry in serenity.” That’s the most fitting description as you stand before the Islamischer Friedhof Wien. Opened on October 3, 2008, it is Austria’s first Islamic cemetery. This tranquil space in the 23rd district of Vienna, Liesing, offers around 5,000 burial plots.

Before this dedicated space existed, Muslims were buried at the Wiener Zentralfriedhof. In the mid-1970s, a separate Islamic section was created there. As demand for Islamic burials grew, the Islamic Religious Community of Austria negotiated with the City of Vienna. Their goal was to establish a dedicated cemetery.

In the early 2000s, the City of Vienna provided land in Liesing. With generous donations, the Islamic Religious Community built a beautiful cemetery building. Herbert Schuller designed the facility. It’s dominated by a grand hall.

Notice the large chandelier. It illuminates the hall’s solemn atmosphere. The light catches the 24 surahs embedded in ceramic surfaces. These special ceramics come from a Turkish city known for its pottery traditions.

Take a moment to find the plaque. It commemorates the successful cooperation between the Islamic Religious Community and the City of Vienna.

Now, observe the graves. They lie on a spacious lawn. Each one faces Mecca. This orientation respects Islamic tradition. The layout emphasizes symmetry. It symbolizes peace and order in honoring the deceased.

The Islamischer Friedhof Wien represents cultural identity and integration. It provides a dignified final resting place. It serves Vienna’s Muslim community. It reflects Vienna’s commitment to religious diversity. This cemetery offers a serene space for remembrance and reflection. It reminds us of the cycle of life and the importance of honoring traditions.
