Did you know that the University of Trieste was nearly not built? Before World War I, the Italian-speaking population of Trieste wanted a university. However Trieste was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire then. The Austrian authorities repeatedly rejected the proposal.

World War II slowed the university’s expansion. The Engineering faculty was limited to naval engineering until the war ended. The faculty of Literature and Philosophy was planned in 1943. However it was postponed until 1945.
After the war Trieste was under joint control of the UK and the USA. The Allied Government allowed new faculties. These included Literature and Philosophy and Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences. They completed the main building on Scoglietto hill.
In 1954, Trieste was returned to Italy. The university awarded President Luigi Einaudi an honorary degree. It was in Economy and Commerce. Soon new faculties emerged. These were Pharmacy, Teaching Sciences, Medicine and Surgery and Political Sciences. New buildings also opened.
In 1978 the School of Modern Languages became a faculty. The faculties of Psychology in 1997 and Architecture in 1998 followed. Today the University of Trieste has 10 departments. They cover a wide range of courses. There are about 15000 students and 1000 professors.
The University of Trieste has many international connections. It actively engages in high-level research. Trieste is a hub for research facilities.
