Gazing at Ekebyhovskyrkan, can you believe this modern marvel was once just a dream amidst a population boom? Ekebyhovskyrkan stands as a testament to the growth and changing needs of the Ekerö community. In the mid-20th century, Ekerö’s population exploded. The quaint Ekerö Kyrka, tucked away from the town’s heart, couldn’t accommodate the burgeoning numbers. The community yearned for a spiritual center closer to their lives. A generous gift of land from the Ihre family of Ekebyhovs Slott in 1966 set the stage for Ekebyhovskyrkan’s creation. The path wasn’t straightforward. Initial architectural plans proved too costly, and the sudden passing of architect Nils Tesch added another layer of complexity. However, the dream persisted. An ecumenical group, already active on the island, stepped forward, offering their expertise and vision. They researched affordable alternatives, exploring options like Rolf Bergh’s relocatable churches. Their influence shaped the church’s unique trajectory. Finally, in 1980, Ekebyhovskyrkan’s doors swung open, a collaborative effort brought to life by prefabricated sections from SektionsByggarna Oresjö, and the interior designs of Sixten Wohlin. The inauguration, led by Bishop Lars Carlzon, embraced an ecumenical spirit, a nod to the diverse community it served. For years, pastors from various denominations graced its pulpit, fostering unity and shared faith. Ekebyhovskyrkan isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant community hub, housing a preschool, meeting rooms, and the pastorate’s offices. The church’s design reflects its inclusive nature. The layout is flexible, with movable chairs replacing fixed pews, adaptable to various needs and gatherings. Light pours in through high windows beneath the pointed gables of the steep roof. The square design and north-south orientation create a sense of open embrace. As you step inside, look up at “Between Heaven and Earth,” a stunning glass artwork. Its 153 pieces, each symbolizing an element of faith, shimmer in the light, a testament to the church’s dedication to inclusivity. Ekebyhovskyrkan stands as more than bricks and mortar. It’s a story of community spirit, resilience, and the enduring power of faith.
