“Protection from waves” is more than just a name here at Namiyoke Inari Shrine. It is the very essence of this sacred ground. Namiyoke Inari Shrine stands as a testament to resilience and faith. It is nestled in Tsukiji, Chūō, Tokyo.

Let’s journey back to 1657. A devastating fire had ravaged Edo, now Tokyo. Rebuilding efforts were constantly thwarted by relentless waves. Locals struggled. The river’s destructive waves hindered their efforts. For two years, despair loomed. Then, a miracle occurred. Legend speaks of a glowing sacred object appearing on the water. Inari was said to reside in the object. A shrine was built to house it. The waves calmed. Thus, Namiyoke Inari Shrine was born. Its name means protection from waves.

After the Great Kantō earthquake in 1923, the Tsukiji fish market found its home here. Namiyoke Inari Shrine became its unofficial guardian. The shrine’s courtyard tells stories of the marketplace. Memorial plaques and carvings are donated by trade groups.

Now, look at the entrance. Two tremendous shishi lion heads stand guard after the torii gate. These lions honor the shrine’s origin. Japanese legend says a lion’s roar overcomes tigers and dragons. These animals rule the wind and clouds, and therefore, waves.

The larger lion is the Tenjō Ōjishi. It weighs one tonne. Admire its detailed brow and golden grin. The vermillion lion is the Benzaiten Ohaguro Shishi. It weighs 700kg. During the Tsukiji Shishi Matsuri Festival, these lions parade through the streets. The festival happens every three years in mid-June. The red lioness is carried by an all-female entourage. This honors its link to the goddess Benzaiten.

Throughout the shrine, find tsuka stone sculptures. They are erected in gratitude for things valued by those working in the area. Spot the tamagozuka egg sculpture by the lioness’ head. You’ll discover tsuka dedicated to sushi and shrimp.

Namiyoke Inari Shrine embodies faith and gratitude. The gods heard the pleas of the people centuries ago. To this day, the hard working men and women of the area respond in kind. Remember the story of Namiyoke Inari Shrine. It is a beacon of hope amidst a sea of challenges.
