Gazing upon Castelletto di Mirano, one might mistake it for a fairytale illustration. This whimsical castle isn’t a medieval fortress. It’s a 19th-century creation, a testament to the romantic spirit of Vincenzo Paolo Barzizza. He envisioned a sanctuary for intellectual pursuits, a place to commune with like-minded friends amidst the serene Venetian landscape. Castelletto di Mirano, more than just a tower, is a complex architectural delight. Four distinct spaces, two open-air from their inception, surround the central octagonal tower. This five-story tower rises from a cylindrical base, a faux ruin with a pointed arch window, adding a touch of playful antiquity. A graceful stone spiral staircase winds its way up to the Belvedere room. Neo-Gothic windows offer breathtaking 360-degree views. Another spiral staircase leads to the topmost terrace, adorned with battlements and an even grander vista. Constructed between 1840 and 1850, Castelletto di Mirano still holds remnants of a fresco. This artwork, by Giovanni de Min, depicts “Venice in History and the Arts,” connecting the castle to the city’s rich cultural heritage. Beneath the tower lies a mysterious grotto. This intricate network of chambers and tunnels once connected to the main villa via a now-sealed passage. Local lore whispers of other subterranean routes, now blocked, leading to neighboring castles in Noale, Stigliano, Castelliviero, and Salzano. The 250-meter underground labyrinth beckons with its caverns, galleries, and a subterranean lake that emerges into the open air. Beside Castelletto di Mirano stretches a man-made lake. The excavation of this lake provided the very earth used to elevate the castle. The entire complex nestles within a charming English garden, situated between the Muson mills above and those in Mirano’s historic center. Castelletto di Mirano is a hidden gem, an unexpected blend of whimsy and history in the heart of the Veneto region.
