The Pozzo presso l’Abisso dei Due Cercatori is located in the Carso Triestino area. It is part of the municipality of Sgonico. This is in the province of Trieste.
Let’s talk about the Abisso dei Due Cercatori. The Abyss of the Two Seekers is nearby. The well sits about fifty meters northwest. It is on the eastern edge of a medium-sized sinkhole.
The main entrance of Pozzo presso l’Abisso dei Due Cercatori lacks a plaque. This adds to its mysterious appeal. The geographical coordinates place it precisely at latitude 45.73204339 and longitude 13.71107514. Its entrance sits at 206 meters above sea level.
The well has a planimetric development of only four meters. Yet it descends to a depth of 36 meters. The bottom reaches an elevation of 170 meters. The walls of the entrance are perfectly vertical. The west wall features a small niche at nine meters deep. The east wall is rich in recesses. These connect with each other. This side shows significant calcification.
The bottom consists of a mix of mud and gravel. This rests on a calcite flow. This calcite blocks the natural continuation of the well. A fissure only centimeters wide suggests a deeper shaft. This shaft seems to be about five meters deep.
Interestingly, there’s a note from August 18 2006. It suggests the cave’s coordinates are incorrect. Bosco Natale Bone stated that the position is off by 180 degrees.
Also nearby is the Grotta a S dell’Abisso dei Due Cercatori. This translates to Cave South of the Abyss of the Two Seekers. Its entrance is on the west side of a sinkhole. This sinkhole is about twenty meters wide and ten meters deep. It is located about a hundred meters south of the Abisso dei Due Cercatori.
The Abisso dei Due Cercatori itself is a cave. It opens in a meadow near the railway line to Opicina. The cave is a series of shafts. They align along a large fracture. It has a complex structure. There are natural bridges and niches. Some drops lead to dead ends.
Concretions are abundant at the start and in the middle. They are especially rich after a window. This can be reached by a swing. It opens in the thirty-meter shaft. After 80 meters the walls are bare and crumbling. Any further passage is blocked. Collapses and clay material obstruct it.
In 1963 the landowner threw a lot of stones into the cave. The first three-meter shaft is now completely blocked. About twenty meters from the bottom of P47 of VG 4939, a ledge can be reached. A climb of about twenty meters leads to very concreted areas. It ends at a chimney that narrows. A small dig leads to two five-meter shafts. A meandering passage connects to VG 3895. This is about 15 meters from one of the lateral bottoms.
