“Pomare, the northern part of Taitai.” It’s a name that echoes with history, a name that whispers tales of Mu0101ori chiefs and government ministers. Standing here, in the heart of Lower Hutt, it’s easy to imagine the past – a time before European settlement, when the land was a thriving Mu0101ori settlement. The name Pomare itself holds a duality, a whisper of two distinct individuals. It could be attributed to Mu0101ui Pu014dmare, a Ngu0101ti Mutunga leader who served as Minister of Health from 1923 to 1926. Or, it could be a tribute to an earlier Mu0101ori chief who called this land home. While the years have brought change, with state housing replacing the original settlements, the spirit of Pomare persists. The neighbourhood is home to Pomare School, a testament to the community’s commitment to education. It’s a reminder that the past, even with its challenges, shapes the present and fuels the aspirations of the future.
