Paróquia Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres wasn’t always here. Its history began on January 25 1940. It was founded by Dom José Gaspar de Fonseca e Silva. It was initially dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Consolata. However a promise made to a Portuguese community from Bemposta dictated a different path. The devotion to Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres prevailed. The name change became official in August 1951 after approval from the Holy See.
The early years were humble. Two existing chapels served as the heart of the parish. The Capela São José and the Capela Santa Luzia. The first vicar Father Antonio Anacleto Brandão de Oliveira took his post in 1941 in the Capela São José. The Stigmatine Fathers played a significant role. They built their theological institute on parish land. They entrusted the parish to their care for a time. Then came the Camiliane sisters and the Missionaries of La Salette. These groups contributed to the parish’s growth and development.
Building the new church was a momentous undertaking. A plot of land donated by Portuguese immigrants was a symbol of hope. The cornerstone was laid in 1951. It was a grand occasion celebrated by Bishop Paulo Rolim Loureiro. The first Mass in the new church building was in March 1957. The entire community rejoiced when the parish moved into the grand new church in April 1957.
