Originally it was built as a chapel for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Several Protestant ministers tried to stop the sale of the land. But their efforts failed. The church acquired the lot in 1924.
Construction began in 1932. Don Carlos Young Jr. oversaw the project. He was the grandson of Brigham Young. The dedication occurred in November 1933.
The result was stunning. The structure features a metal and concrete frame. Marble tiles make up its facade. The central tower appears to be a modern take on the Salt Lake Temple’s spires.
The Washington Family Church used 16404 blocks of Birdseye marble. This marble came from Utah. Transporting it to Washington D.C. was costly. The steeple once held the angel Moroni statue.
For over 40 years this building served as a meeting house. In 1977 the Unification Church bought it. Today it is known as the Washington Family Church.
