“Konpira-san of Sanuki,” they called it long ago. Kotohira-gu Shrine stands as a testament to faith and maritime safety.

This Shinto shrine is in the town of Kotohira in Kagawa, Japan. It is more than just a building. It is a journey.

Kotohira-gu is dedicated to safe sea travel and to sailors. It is also dedicated to Ōmononushi. Many pilgrims come to visit from all over Japan.

Before the Meiji era, Kotohira Shrine was also a Buddhist site. This detail adds another layer to its rich history.

The path to the main shrine includes 785 stone steps. To the inner shrine there are 1,368 steps in total. These steps are a physical challenge and a spiritual journey. Hundreds of visitors climb these steps every day.

Along the way, you will find shops and stones carved with donor names. There is also a sake museum.

Don’t miss the yuzu-flavored hard candy called kamiyo ame. Visitors break the candy with a small hammer. They share it with those who cannot make the climb. This symbolizes shared good fortune.

Kotohira-gu is the head of a network of 683 shrines. It was officially designated as a nationally significant shrine from 1871 to 1946.

Inside the main hall are paintings on the ceiling. Be sure to look up and admire them. You can also find yellow amulets of happiness at the main shrine.

Nearby is Matsuo-ji Temple. It once managed Kotohira-gu. En no Gyōja founded it. He had a vision of Konpira Gongen at the site.

Kotohira-gu also holds Important Cultural Properties. These include a Heian period statue and ink paintings by Maruyama Ōkyo.

Kotohira-gu stands as a symbol of hope for sailors. It offers a taste of history and culture for all who visit.
