Hidden in the heart of Hong Kong Island stands Wong Nai Chau Teng. It is a place with a story etched in every stone and ripple of water. Wong Nai Chau Teng began its life as a reservoir. It was a crucial part of Hong Kong’s early waterworks.

Let’s step back to 1899. This is when the Wong Nai Chung Reservoir was completed. It became the third oldest surviving waterworks construction in Hong Kong. It supplemented the Tai Tam Group of Reservoirs. The reservoir expanded the island’s water storage facilities.

The dam was built following the valley’s natural shape. It stretched 270 feet long and stood 50 feet high. Its unique boomerang shape is notable. However, it only held 27 million gallons of water. That is just 38% of the capacity of the Pok Fu Lam Reservoir.

Fast forward to 1982. The reservoir’s operations ceased due to its limited capacity. But the story of Wong Nai Chau Teng did not end there. In 1986, it was reborn as Wong Nai Chung Reservoir Park. It became a space for recreation and leisure.

Imagine sampans and boats gliding across the water. These were available until 2017. The park became a beloved spot for locals and tourists alike.

Today, we see more than just a park. We see historical monuments. The dam, valve house, and weir stand as reminders of the past. These structures were declared monuments in 2009. They highlight the engineering and history of Hong Kong’s water supply.

Look closely at the valve house. You can see the plaque engraved with “1899”. It marks the year of its construction. The weir, part of the dam, still drains excess water. These elements connect us to the reservoir’s original function.

Wong Nai Chau Teng offers a peaceful escape. It is also a journey through time. It connects the natural landscape with human innovation. It reminds us of Hong Kong’s ongoing development. It also highlights the importance of preserving our history.
