Founded in 1955 the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax has a rich history. It began as the Fairfax Unitarian Center. Twenty-eight individuals signed the membership book in April 1955. Services were initially held at Oakton Elementary School. The congregation rapidly grew. They hired their first minister Rev Edward Ericson. In 1958 they purchased land in Oakton. The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax became involved in the community. One founding member Annabel Perlik described the group’s goals. They sought a place to share common purpose in a vibrant church community. They aimed for spiritual growth mutual respect meaningful relationships and service to the congregation and community.

The congregation’s commitment to social justice is evident throughout its history. In the 1960s the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax housed members of the Congress of Racial Equality CORE. They trained students to become freedom riders in the South. This action prompted threats of legal action from Fairfax County. The board unanimously supported the training. Despite threats and vandalism the church stood firm. In 1963 during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom John M Wells the church’s minister led a group of approximately 1600 people including UUA president Dana McLean Greeley.

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax has continuously adapted and expanded. In 1963 they moved to their current location on Hunter Mill Road. The church underwent significant construction and renovations throughout the decades. The current sanctuary opened in 1985. A successful fundraising campaign made the expansion possible. The church formed partnerships with congregations in Romania and India. They established a thriving music program and a strong adult education program. The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax consistently embraces innovation and community engagement. They participate in local initiatives such as the Hypothermia Project. They address community issues like homelessness and gun violence. Their commitment to social justice continues to be a driving force.
