Tick-tock goes the Torre do Relógio. Its massive clock faces gleam in the sun. This isn’t just any clock tower. This is the Torre do Relógio in São Paulo’s Cidade Universitária. It’s a landmark a symbol of the University of São Paulo’s rich history.

The Torre do Relógio wasn’t always there. Its construction began much later than the university’s founding. In 1954 the cornerstone was laid. It was part of a grander plan a civic center for the growing university campus. But that plan changed over time. This clock tower stands as a testament to the ever-evolving vision of the Cidade Universitária.

The Torre do Relógio is more than just a timekeeper. It’s a work of art. Designed by the influential modernist architect Rino Levi its two concrete wings soar 50 meters into the sky. The sculptural elements are the work of Elisabeth Nobiling a renowned sculptor and professor. Her twelve bas-relief panels adorn each face of the tower. They tell a story.

On one side the panels depict the “world of fantasy”. We see images of poetry social sciences economics music dance and the arts. The other side shows the “world of reality”: astronomy chemistry biology physics geology and mathematics. These are not just random images. They reflect the diverse fields of study within the university. They encourage contemplation and thought-provoking reflections.

The clock itself is remarkably precise. It’s regulated by an atomic impulse from the university’s Institute of Astronomy Geophysics and Atmospheric Sciences. Accuracy is down to a hundredth of a second per day. The main clock mechanism batteries and motor are housed in a subterranean chamber beneath the structure. This ensures flawless operation of the impressive timekeeping system.

At the base of the Torre do Relógio there’s a circular reflecting pool. Surrounding it is a mosaic inscription. It’s a powerful statement: “In the universe of culture the center is everywhere”. These words are by Miguel Reale a former rector of USP. They perfectly encapsulate the tower’s significance. It’s a central point a hub of intellectual life and cultural activity. It’s a symbol of the university’s commitment to knowledge and creativity.

The Torre do Relógio is more than a clock. It’s a symbol of São Paulo’s cultural heritage a testament to the enduring power of education. A perfect spot to contemplate. It’s a reminder of the university’s rich history and its ongoing pursuit of knowledge. Take a moment to appreciate this wonderful monument. It is an integral part of the life and legacy of the University of São Paulo.
