Remarkable isn’t it? This is the Nakagin Capsule Tower. Or rather was. Right here in Tokyo’s Ginza district stood a marvel of mid-century modern architecture. A testament to Japan’s postwar economic boom. This wasn’t just another building. The Nakagin Capsule Tower was a symbol. A symbol of the Metabolist movement.
The Nakagin Capsule Tower was unique. Designed by the visionary Kisho Kurokawa. He envisioned a structure that could adapt and evolve. Each capsule a self-contained unit. Think tiny apartment. Efficiently designed. Perfectly suited for Tokyo’s busy salarymen. Originally intended as a hotel. It also housed studio apartments for short-term stays.
Imagine 140 capsules. Stacked like Lego blocks. Each measuring a mere 2.5 meters by 2.5 meters by 4 meters. A small space. Yet each contained a bed a desk a refrigerator. Even a television and a reel-to-reel tape deck. A bathroom too. About the size of an airplane lavatory. A circular window dominated one end. Letting in abundant natural light.
Construction took just two years. From 1970 to 1972. It involved both on-site and off-site work. The two concrete core towers were built on-site. The capsules were prefabricated. 450 kilometers away. Then shipped to Tokyo. Attached to the towers. Five to eight capsules were added each day. A remarkable feat of engineering.
The Nakagin Capsule Tower’s modular design was revolutionary. Capsules could be removed or replaced. A concept of sustainability. Ahead of its time. However the reality proved different. Maintenance was neglected. The capsules deteriorated. Repairs were costly. Renovation was estimated at 6.2 million yen per capsule. Too expensive.
Sadly the Nakagin Capsule Tower met its end. Demolition began in April 2022. A digital archive was created though. Preserving the building’s architectural value in 3D data. A small consolation. Some capsules were saved too. Donated to museums around the world. The Nakagin Capsule Tower might be gone. Its legacy lives on however. A reminder of bold architectural vision. And the challenges of maintaining such a unique structure.
