Wonder how this library helped shape a governor’s career? I’m thrilled to share the story of the Theodore R. McKeldin Library. This is the main library for the University of Maryland. It stands tall on the College Park campus.

Constructed in 1958 the Theodore R. McKeldin Library is named after former Maryland Governor Theodore McKeldin. He secured the funding for its construction. The library boasts seven stories and two wings. It is a hub of knowledge and resources for students and researchers alike.

Before the Theodore R. McKeldin Library a library/gym building existed on campus. It was built in 1893. This earlier library even survived the Great Fire of 1912. It was razed in 1958 to make way for Tydings Hall. Shoemaker Library then served as the main library until McKeldin Library opened.

The story behind the Theodore R. McKeldin Library is quite interesting. Harry Clifton Byrd was president of the university. He resigned to run against Governor Theodore Roosevelt McKeldin in 1954. McKeldin used the issue of the old library’s inadequacy to his advantage. He emphasized the importance of a good library for all students. McKeldin won the election and then funded the new library.

Theodore R. McKeldin Library is not just about books. It’s about history and political maneuvering. It holds a vast collection of materials. As of April 2014 it contained over 2.4 million items. More than 250000 are in Japanese.
