Amidst the urban tapestry of Washington D.C., lies Greenway, a neighborhood brimming with a unique history. Greenway, a name synonymous with its lush proximity to Anacostia Park, wasn’t always the collection of brick rowhouses and garden apartments we see today. Originally, the western part of Greenway was marshland. It was transformed in the 1880s by a massive land reclamation project led by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This project, intended to create commercially viable land, ultimately gave birth to Anacostia Park. Greenway’s southern section emerged from the ashes of a failed luxury housing project, East Washington Heights, and the subsequent success of the North Randle Highlands development in 1903. The northern part, however, and the name “Greenway” itself, originated from a different era. In 1940, with the looming threat of war, the need for housing for defense workers became critical. Real estate developer Morris Cafritz answered the call. He envisioned a large, low-cost housing development, and Greenway, a collection of 75 to 80 apartment buildings, was born. Each building, designed by architect Harry Edwards, housed 11 units, offering a variety of sizes from studios to two-bedroom apartments. This project rapidly took shape, with seventeen buildings completed by November 1940. Almost all of Greenway Apartments, a 796-unit complex, opened just a year later. The Stoddert Dwellings public housing project followed soon after. However, these single-family homes, built as little more than wooden shacks, quickly deteriorated. Today, Greenway stands as a testament to its layered past. The neighborhood, predominantly occupied by multi-family homes and public housing projects, tells a story of transformation and resilience. While the neighborhood thrives alongside Anacostia Park, ironically, residents lack direct access to the park and waterfront due to the imposing barrier of the freeway and railway tracks. This separation leaves Greenway with a poignant connection to its namesake, a green expanse just out of reach.
