Remember the 1960s. That’s when Tsing Tam Upper Reservoir came to life. It is a vital part of Hong Kong’s water infrastructure. Nestled between Tai Po and Yuen Long, Tsing Tam Upper Reservoir offers more than just a scenic view.

Tsing Tam Upper Reservoir is part of a larger system. It includes an upper and lower reservoir. The upper reservoir is the larger of the two. Both were constructed in the 60s. Nearby rivers were diverted to the Tai Lam Reservoir. This diversion deprived local farmers and villages of their essential water source.

The government recognized the farmers’ needs. It addressed the impact of the Tai Lam Chung Reservoir catchwaters. Tsing Tam Upper Reservoir and other irrigation projects were initiated. Construction started in 1959. Progress was initially slow. Difficult foundation conditions at the upper dam site caused delays.

However, the dams were officially opened on January 29, 1962. The Director of Public Works unveiled a plaque. The combined cost of Tsing Tam Upper Reservoir and two other dams was $6 million. Their total storage capacity reached 145 million gallons.

Tsing Tam Upper Reservoir and its sister reservoir were designed strategically. They impound water from the valley. They also capture water from the Shek Kong catchwater through a tunnel. Any excess water is channeled through another tunnel. This connects to the Tai Lam Chung catchwater.

Today the area is a beautiful hiking trail. The concrete path provides easy walking. This path offers great views of Kai Kung Leng. The hike takes about three hours. It’s suitable for families and strollers.

You can also see an eco garden and an organic farm. Keep your eyes peeled for the glorious view of Kai Kung Leng across the valley. The Eco Garden is small but filled with flowers and butterflies. Photographers love this spot.

As you stroll along the trail, take note of the serene water. Imagine the engineering feats that created Tsing Tam Upper Reservoir. Also think of the local communities that once relied on the diverted rivers.

When you reach the reservoir bridge, pause to appreciate the scene. Fly a drone to capture the big dam and cascading waterfall. Remember to get a fishing permit if you want to fish here.

Don’t miss the Tsing Tam Lower Reservoir. It’s easy to overlook. Look for the small path leading to its bridge. From there enjoy views of Yuen Long and a small waterfall.

The creation of Tsing Tam Upper Reservoir secured water supply. It was meant for farmers in Pat Heung. It also contributes to the Tai Lam Chung Reservoir. The Ho Pui Reservoir was built at the same time. It served the same purpose.

The reservoirs provide vital support. They help balance the needs of agriculture and urban development. Next time you turn on the tap, remember Tsing Tam Upper Reservoir. It stands as a symbol of Hong Kong’s commitment to water management. It reflects the city’s dedication to its people and its environment.
