“An Azuma-bashi Bridge still exists in the same location today.” With those words, let’s step back in time and explore the story of Azuma-bashi Bridge. This bridge is more than just a way to cross the Sumida River. It is a symbol of Asakusa’s history and resilience.

The first Azuma-bashi Bridge was built in 1774. Six townspeople received permission from the Edo Shogunate government to construct it. During the Edo Period, only four bridges spanned the Sumida River. These were Ryogoku-bashi, Eitai-bashi, Azuma-bashi and Shin-ohashi bridges. Interestingly, the Shogunate government built all except Azuma-bashi Bridge.

The name “Azuma-bashi” has an interesting origin. One theory suggests it was named because it ran east from Edo. Another says it was east of Edo. So, it was called “Azumabashi”. The characters for “east bridge” were then changed. The more popular and elegant characters “吾妻橋” were used. It officially became “吾妻橋” (Azuma-bashi) in 1876.

The Azuma-bashi Bridge you see today is not the original. It has been reconstructed several times over the years. The current version dates back to 1931.

Crossing the Azuma-bashi Bridge offers a unique perspective. It connects the Sensoji Temple area with Tokyo Skytree. In spring, the area transforms into a beautiful landscape. Three hundred cherry trees bloom along the riverside. The soft pink blossoms create a stunning view.

Azuma-bashi Bridge has also been known as Ookawa-bashi. This alternate name adds another layer to its rich history. The bridge stands in Taito-ku, Kaminarimon and Asakusa. It also extends into Sumida-ku, Azumabashi.

The Azuma-bashi Bridge has nearby stations. Asakusa Station is accessible via the Asakusa Line, Ginza Line, Tobu Line and Tsukuba Express.

So, as you stand on the Azuma-bashi Bridge, take a moment. Remember its past. Think about the townspeople who built the first bridge. Consider the many changes it has witnessed. This bridge is a testament to Tokyo’s enduring spirit.
