Lost in the bustling streets of Matsudo a quiet haven awaits. This is Nogikuno a neighbourhood nestled near Matsudo Shrine. It’s a place where history whispers through the leaves of ancient trees. Imagine the lives lived here generations ago.

Nogikuno’s history is interwoven with that of Matsudo. Matsudo was once a vital post town on the Mito Kaido. This ancient road linked Edo to the north. Today Matsudo is a vibrant suburb of Tokyo. Nogikuno however retains much of its old-world charm. It sits peacefully amidst the modern developments.

Think of the local families. They have lived in Nogikuno for centuries. They’ve witnessed Matsudo’s transformation. They’ve seen the construction of Matsudo Shrine in 1626. This shrine deifies a third-century Imperial prince. He is said to have once camped on this very spot.

Picture the annual grand festival of Matsudo Shrine. It is called reitaisai. It takes place every October 18. The vibrant colours. The sounds of drums. The festive atmosphere. All spill over into Nogikuno. The neighbourhood becomes a part of the celebration.

And then there’s the Sakagawa River. It flows gently past Matsudo Shrine and Nogikuno. Every summer locals practice a centuries-old tradition. They float lanterns down the river. It’s a beautiful sight. Each lantern carries a wish to their ancestors.

A short walk from Nogikuno brings you to Tojogaoka History Park. It’s situated on a hill overlooking the Edogawa River. Here you’ll find Tojo House. This is the beautifully preserved home of Tokugawa Akitake. He was the younger brother of the last Tokugawa shogun.

Built in 1884 Tojo House is a remarkable example of traditional Japanese architecture. Its fireproof storeroom formal receiving rooms and sleeping quarters offer a glimpse into the past. Even the bathroom with its Taisho-era tub is a fascinating sight.

Notice the intricate carvings throughout Tojo House. Hollyhock leaves dominate the decorations. These are the Tokugawa family crest. In the granny flat however butterflies and flowers take centre stage. Akitake’s mother cherished these delicate designs.

Though the servants’ quarters are not open to the public you can see its two-story structure. This contrasts with the rest of the single-story house. The servants were forbidden to look down upon their superiors from this part. They had to keep the shutters closed.

As you explore Nogikuno remember this. It is a place where old and new coexist. It’s a place that has quietly witnessed centuries of change. Nogikuno’s gentle beauty and rich history await. It is part of Matsudo’s soul. It represents the enduring spirit of Japan.
