Ever wondered how radio technology evolved? The RadioMuseum Köln is a great place to discover the history of broadcasting.

Welcome to the RadioMuseum Köln in Cologne’s Dellbrück district. Here, we explore the captivating world of radio’s historical development.

In 1999 a group of avid collectors founded the Fördergesellschaft RadioMuseum Köln e.V. They shared a vision. They wanted to create a radio museum accessible to everyone. These enthusiasts aimed to showcase diverse devices. They also wanted to explain their history and technology.

The RadioMuseum Köln begins its story with detector receivers. These devices made listening possible in the early 1920s. Vacuum tube technology was still in its infancy then. Adjusting the detector was difficult. A spring tip had to find the correct contact. This was on a lead glance or iron pyrite inside a glass tube. This allowed the reception of the local transmitter. A listener could then hear the broadcast through headphones.

Next came radios using vacuum tubes for reception. Initially, these lacked loudspeakers. Listeners still needed headphones.

The RadioMuseum Köln makes the evolution of radio technology clear. It shows the journey from its beginnings to the present day.

The museum boasts a vast collection. It includes early devices and unusual modern transistor radios. The Fördergesellschaft RadioMuseum Köln e.V. also owns Alard Roose’s Grundig taperecorder collection. He is a member of the RadioMuseum Köln from the Netherlands. The RadioMuseum Köln’s collection comprises around 4000 items.

In 2016, the Museum für Angewandte Kunst Köln displayed 22 exhibits. These came from the RadioMuseum Köln’s collection. The special exhibition was named RADIO Zeit Röhrengeräte, Design-Ikonen, Internetradio.

Visiting the RadioMuseum Köln is possible on specific days. The regular opening times are on certain Sundays of the month from 2 PM to 6 PM. You can also arrange visits by phone. The admission fee is 5.00 € per person. You can reach the museum by calling 0221 / 92232970.

The RadioMuseum Köln is at Waltherstr. 49-51 in Cologne-Dellbrück. It is located within the Total Walther complex, Haus 32.

The RadioMuseum Köln not only collects and displays. It is also involved in education. The museum collaborates with schools. It even has its own amateur radio station.

The RadioMuseum Köln preserves the history of radio. It inspires future generations. The dedication of its founders and members made it possible. Their passion keeps the story of radio alive for all to experience.
