The Akali Singh Sikh Society of Vancouver stands tall on Skeena Street. This magnificent Gurudwara is a beacon of faith and community for Vancouver’s Sikh community. It’s a place of worship, but it’s also a hub of activity. The Akali Singh Sikh Society was founded in 1952 by a group of Sikh community members who wanted to create a place for worship and community. The Society plays an important role in promoting Sikhism and providing religious education to its members. It boasts a colorful history filled with moments of dedication and resourcefulness. The society was initially established in a rented church building on East 11th Avenue, later acquiring the building. When the society outgrew its location, it moved to its current home on Skeena Street, a 3.8-acre site that allowed for a much larger Gurdwara. This generous move had its roots in a unique gesture of unity between Sikh and Hindu communities. The Society decided to sell its 11th Avenue property at a reduced price to the newly formed Mahalaxmi society, ensuring its continuity as a place of worship. Now, it’s a bustling center of spirituality, education, and community building. The Gurdwara is a place where Sikh values are celebrated – a place where kindness is emphasized, and where respect is extended to all.
