“Lights, music, ideas. Immerse yourself in creativity.” That’s the essence of Vivid Sydney. This is where Night and Day, Day and Night finds its place.

Vivid Sydney is more than just a festival. It’s an annual explosion of light, music, and innovative ideas that transforms Sydney. Imagine the city as a canvas. Buildings become art, and the night sky dances with color.

Since 2009, Vivid Sydney has captivated audiences with its outdoor immersive light installations. Projections transform iconic landmarks like the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. The entire central business district becomes a nighttime art gallery.

Night and Day, Day and Night is part of this transformation. It is an integral part of the Vivid Light Walk. The Vivid Light Walk winds through The Rocks, Circular Quay, and the Royal Botanic Garden. Here individuals interact with light installations using unique technologies.

Vivid Sydney began as “Smart Light Sydney” focusing on low-energy light displays. Anthony Bastic envisioned a light walk around Circular Quay. The concept expanded to include music and ideas. Thus, Vivid Sydney was born.

AGB Events curated the public light component from 2009 to 2018. Today, Destination NSW, the state’s tourism agency, owns and manages the festival. Vivid Sydney has grown into the biggest festival of lights, music, and ideas in the world.

Vivid Sydney wasn’t always smooth sailing. The 2020 event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2021 festival faced postponements and eventual cancellation.

Despite these setbacks, Vivid Sydney has seen tremendous commercial success. In 2012, it attracted over 500,000 visitors generating millions in income. By 2017, attendance soared to 2.33 million injecting over $143 million into the NSW economy.

The artistic program of Vivid Sydney includes Vivid Light, Vivid Music, Vivid Ideas, Vivid School, and Vivid Live. Vivid Light installations invite interaction. Vivid Music events electrify the Sydney CBD. Vivid Ideas hosts talks and workshops centered around creative industries.

Past light installations have included Musical Cubes. Participants created music by manipulating illuminated cubes. “Heart of the City” allowed people to see their heartbeats reflected in light. In 2022, a Martumili artists’ painting was projected onto the Sydney Opera House.

Susan Kosti’s “What Lies Beneath” transformed Nawi Cove into an underwater habitat using NASA data.

As you wander through Vivid Sydney, note how Night and Day, Day and Night enhances the urban space. The interplay of light and form creates a unique sensory experience. The festival embraces technology and artistic expression.

Each year, Vivid Sydney evolves pushing creative boundaries. Night and Day, Day and Night installation stands as a testament to innovation. It contributes to Sydney’s vibrant cultural identity. This is where art, technology, and community converge.
