Beneath the stone, etched in two languages, lies a promise. We stand before the Spomenik padlim v borbi proti nacifašizmu / Monumento ai caduti nella lotta contro il nazifascismo. It stands as a solemn tribute to those who perished fighting against Nazism and Fascism.

This monument serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during a dark chapter in history. It honors the brave souls who resisted oppression. The Spomenik padlim v borbi proti nacifašizmu stands at the intersection of Via Igo Gruden and Via Srecko Kosovel. It is located next to the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena.

Dedicated in 1973, the monument features a marble plaque and a large slate basin. Stone columns support the structure. The inscription “PADLIM V BOJU PROTI NACIFASIZMU / AI CADUTI NELLA LOTTA CONTRO IL NAZIFASCISMO” is prominently displayed. This translates to “To the Fallen in the Fight Against Nazism-Fascism”.

The monument also lists names of those who died. These names include those fallen in battle. Some were killed as hostages. Others perished in concentration camps. The names Križmančič, Mavec, Poženel, and Skerjanc are among those remembered.

A red star adorns the top of the inscription on the plaque. A powerful verse is also inscribed. It speaks of sacrifice and hope. “NE MISMO MRTVI : SEBE SMO VSEJALI! / V GLOBOKIH BRAZDAH NASE SETVE ZELENIJO / O BRATJE, BRATJE MI ZATO SMO PALI / DA SE OBZORJA TEMNA VAM ZJASNIJO”. This translates to “WE ARE NOT DEAD: WE HAVE SOWN OURSELVES! / IN DEEP FURROWS OUR SOWINGS ARE GREEN / O BROTHERS, BROTHERS, WE THEREFORE HAVE FALLEN / SO THAT THE DARK HORIZONS MIGHT CLEAR FOR YOU”.

The Spomenik padlim v borbi proti nacifašizmu is maintained by the Comune di Giuliana. Its excellent condition reflects the enduring importance of remembrance. It is more than just a monument. The Spomenik padlim v borbi proti nacifašizmu is a place for reflection. It stands as a symbol of resilience and a warning against repeating the horrors of the past. As we stand here, let us remember their courage. Let us honor their memory by working towards a future free from hatred and oppression.

Trieste’s Monumento ai caduti nella lotta contro il nazifascismo is not to be confused with another monument in the Parco della Rimembranza. That monument honors those fallen in World War I. It was unveiled in 1935, during the reign of Vittorio Emanuele III. The sculptor Attilio Selva created the statues. Enrico del Nebbio designed the pedestal. The monument depicts five nude men in a war scene. The pedestal bears the inscription “Trieste ai caduti nella guerra di liberazione MCMXV–MCMXVIII”. This monument embodies the nationalist idea of liberation from Austro-Hungarian rule.
