From atop this hill, a unique story unfolds. This is Astrid Lindgrens Berg, named not for a geological feature, but for a woman who championed nature. Astrid Lindgrens Berg stands within Hansta Nature Reserve in northern Stockholm. The hill was named in 1989 to honor Astrid Lindgren. She was the beloved author of Pippi Longstocking. She tirelessly fought to preserve the natural and cultural heritage of Hansta. Imagine the bustling metropolis of a “Järva City” planned for this very spot. Thousands of apartments and businesses were envisioned, threatening to pave over the very ground we stand on. Thanks to the protests of many, including Lindgren, these plans were scrapped. Lindgren’s involvement in the “Save Hansta” campaign played a crucial role in protecting this area. The campaign encouraged people to symbolically adopt trees to prevent them from being felled for development. Her efforts, alongside many others, ultimately led to the establishment of Hansta Nature Reserve in 1999. Astrid Lindgrens Berg itself is comprised of two peaks, both reaching a height of 55 meters. Look closely at the eastern peak. There you’ll find a red granite memorial stone. It was erected on May 21, 1989, just a few months before the Berlin Wall fell. The stone bears Lindgren’s signature and a copper plaque. It reads, “Inaugurated on May 21, 1989, in gratitude for Astrid Lindgren’s support for the preservation of Hansta – The Association Save Järvafältet.” So, as you take in the view from Astrid Lindgrens Berg, remember the woman who helped save it. Her legacy extends beyond the pages of her books. She is a reminder of the power of one voice to protect the places we love.
