From a vision of a new urban center, the Überbauung Grünau emerged in Zurich’s Altstetten district in the 1970s. This massive housing project, nestled between the Limmat River, Europabrücke, the Werdhölzli sewage treatment plant, and Bernerstrasse, aimed to combat the city’s dwindling population. The Überbauung Grünau was intended to provide much-needed housing and create a vibrant hub on the city’s edge. Streets like Tüffenwies, Grünauring, Brändlistrasse, and Meierwiesenstrasse enclose this expansive area. The project, the largest of its kind in Zurich at the time, was a collaboration between the city, two church congregations, and four housing cooperatives. Two long residential blocks, each stretching approximately 250 meters, and a prominent high-rise dominate the Überbauung Grünau. The scale of the development, however, quickly drew criticism. Concerns arose about the lack of adequate infrastructure. The Überbauung Grünau, despite its noble goals, was perceived by some as a potential ghetto, plagued by vandalism and petty crime. Beyond the residential buildings, the Überbauung Grünau also houses a school, a community center, and a senior center, reflecting the intended mix of generations and social backgrounds. The planners envisioned the Überbauung Grünau as a diverse community, with apartments catering to residents from various socioeconomic strata. Originally, the plans even included a Protestant and a Catholic church within the complex. The residential buildings in the Überbauung Grünau offer a wide variety of apartments. The two long blocks combined house 605 apartments, while the high-rise adds another 100 units to the total. The goal was to foster a well-integrated neighborhood. Today, the Überbauung Grünau is home to approximately 3,700 people from diverse nationalities. It is a vibrant neighborhood with good public transport links and infrastructure, including a daycare center, school, after-school care, community center, retirement home, Chilehus, and a supermarket. Despite its initial challenges, the Überbauung Grünau has evolved into a dynamic community. The city’s ongoing efforts, such as the construction of the Werdwies settlement and the establishment of the Voi Migros supermarket, have contributed to improving the quality of life in the area.
