The Santa Fe Reptile and Bug Museum began its life in 2013 as Harrell House. It has undergone a transformation, evolving into a non-profit organization dedicated to connecting people with the natural world. Located within the Santa Fe Place mall and later a temporary location at the Santa Fe Fashion Outlet mall, the Santa Fe Reptile and Bug Museum offers an up-close look at the fascinating world of creepy crawlies and slithering creatures. Inside the Santa Fe Reptile and Bug Museum, you’ll encounter a diverse collection of over 100 live animals. These include giant tarantulas, scorpions that glow under ultraviolet light, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and lizards. You’ll also discover the Crawlywood Collection, boasting over 3,000 preserved insects from around the globe. Daily at 4 p.m., the museum comes alive with feeding frenzies. You can witness reptiles devouring crickets, worms, and rodents on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays are reserved for aquatic feedings. Wednesdays are the main event for the tarantulas, scorpions, and other arachnids. Their menu includes crickets, cockroaches, and other delectable treats. The Santa Fe Reptile and Bug Museum is more than just a display of curious creatures. It’s an interactive experience. Visitors can touch some of the gentler residents. The museum also hosts field trips, day camps, scout groups, and birthday parties. Founder Wade Harrell even takes a mobile version of the museum to schools, museums, and homes, spreading knowledge and appreciation for these often-misunderstood creatures. Many of the reptiles at the Santa Fe Reptile and Bug Museum are rescued pets. This provides an opportunity to educate visitors about responsible pet ownership, particularly when it comes to reptiles. Thanks to a grant, the museum offers free programs to Santa Fe’s public schools. These include free admission for field trips and outreach programs that bring the wonders of the museum directly to the classroom.
