In 1961 six Canadians stationed in Washington DC founded the Potomac Curling Club. Their dream was a dedicated curling center. For years they curled on borrowed ice in rented spaces. They moved from College Park to Silver Spring. The ice conditions were less than ideal. No two sheets were the same length. Imagine the challenge of getting the right draw weight.
Despite the obstacles they persisted. They even had a friendly rivalry with the Hershey Curling Club. Their competitions were infrequent due to lack of their own ice.
Then came a breakthrough. In 2002 the Potomac Curling Club finally opened the National Capital Curling Center. It was a four-sheet dedicated curling facility. Their dream became a reality. The center is located in Laurel Maryland. The facility’s opening coincided with the 2002 Olympics. The increased interest in curling doubled the club’s membership. An open house attracted 700 visitors.

The Fred Spanner trophy a gilt model airplane is awarded for various achievements. The club’s history shows the importance of community and shared passion.
