A tale of epidemics and divine intervention awaits us at Yakumo Shrine. This hidden gem in Kamakura offers a glimpse into Japan’s rich cultural heritage. Are you ready to step back in time?

Yakumo Shrine, also known as Yakumo Jinja, is said to be Kamakura’s oldest talismanic shrine. Its history stretches back to around 1082. Yoshimitsu Minamoto, a samurai of the Minamoto clan during the Heian Period, founded it.

Imagine Kamakura plagued by epidemics. The people suffered greatly. Yoshimitsu Minamoto sought a solution. He established Yakumo Shrine as a branch of Kyoto’s Gion Shrine. Gion Shrine, now Yasaka Shrine, was renowned for its power to ward off sickness.

Local stories say that the epidemics lessened around 1084. From that time on, Yakumo Shrine became a beacon of hope. People flocked here to repel bad luck and pray for good health.

The separation of Shinto and Buddhism during the Meiji period brought changes. Many shrines dedicated to Gozu Tennō were renamed. Yakumo Shrine became the official name, though locals affectionately call it Gion-san still.

Today, Yakumo Shrine offers a peaceful escape. It is a place to reflect and connect with history. As you explore the grounds, notice the large stones. These are the Shinrasaburo stones, believed to have belonged to Yoshimitsu himself. Feel the weight of history as you touch them. Imagine Yoshimitsu praying here for the people of Kamakura.

Don’t miss the small Inari shrine. Here you can admire the cute stone foxes. They guard this sacred space. Also, be sure to visit the shrine’s office. Collect a red Goshuin stamp as a memento of your visit to Yakumo Shrine.

Yakumo Shrine stands as a testament to faith. It shows the power of prayer. It reminds us of the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Take a moment to appreciate the tranquility. Feel the blessings of good luck.
