Time stands still at the Hung Shing Temple on Ap Lei Chau. This isn’t just a temple. It is a doorway to a Hong Kong of centuries past.

This Hung Shing Temple is thought to have been built in 1773. Locals erected it to worship Hung Shing. He was a deity who protected fishermen and maritime traders. This temple remains one of the few that retains its original feng shui setting. It still faces the sea. Its close ties to the community are strong.

Look at the dragon poles in the forecourt. These poles are rare in Hong Kong. Locals believe the dragons protect the area. They guard against spirits from Aberdeen’s “tiger land.” That is where the Old Aberdeen Police Station is now.

The Hung Shing Festival is a major event here. It takes place on the 13th day of the second lunar month. The festival brings the community together. Parades and performances fill the air. This tradition has continued for over 240 years.

Notice the temple’s structure. It is a Qing vernacular building. It features two halls and three bays. A covered courtyard sits between the halls. Side chambers flank the courtyard.

Marvel at the Shiwan ceramic figurines on the roof ridges. These exquisite figures are historic. Find them on the entrance hall and courtyard parapet walls. They add color and character to the Hung Shing Temple.

In 1930, the Chinese Temples Committee took over the temple’s management. In 2014, it was declared a monument. This recognition protects its historical and cultural value.

Hung Shing was known as the God of the South Sea. Fishermen in southern China revered him. According to history, Hung Shing’s surname was “Hung” and given name “Hei”. He was an important official in the Tong Dynasty. He was knowledgeable about geography and astronomy. He used his knowledge to help merchants and fishermen. People wished his spirit would continuously protect them. They built this temple in his memory. The Emperor of Tong Dynasty honored him as the King of South Sea.

Take a moment to appreciate this unique temple. The Hung Shing Temple on Ap Lei Chau stands as a testament to Hong Kong’s rich maritime history and enduring traditions. Its existence is a result of people’s belief and respect for Hung Shing.
