Was this entire block once just one man’s property? You might be surprised to learn that the impressive Kamienica Lipińskiego building before you is just one piece of a larger puzzle. This grand Neo-Renaissance building, standing proudly on Aleje Jerozolimskie, was once part of a series of properties owned by Józef Lipiński, a prominent figure in late 19th-century Warsaw. Constructed between 1897 and 1898, the Kamienica Lipińskiego was designed by either Józef Huss or Witold Lanci, both renowned architects of their time.

The building’s ornate facade, with its intricate details and striking corner design, is a testament to the opulence of the era. Sadly, not all of Lipiński’s properties have survived the test of time. In fact, only two remain standing on Aleje Jerozolimskie: this one, and another at number 109. The Kamienica Lipiński itself narrowly escaped demolition in 2005 when its then-owner proposed replacing it with a modern office building. Thankfully, public outcry and the building’s subsequent addition to the register of historic monuments in 2006 saved it from destruction.

Purchased by a Swedish investor in 2007, the Kamienica Lipiński underwent a meticulous restoration between 2009 and 2010. The restoration returned the facade to its former glory, recreating the original design using archival photographs and surviving fragments. While the restored building now houses modern offices and restaurants, it stands as a proud testament to Warsaw’s history, its resilience palpable in every intricately carved detail.
