The Parafia Nawrócenia Świętego Pawła Apostoła’s history began in July 1948. Cardinal August Hlond established the parish. He carved it from parts of other local parishes. Initially, the community gathered in a humble chapel. This chapel belonged to the Brothers Albertine on Grochowska Street. Imagine trying to fit a growing congregation into five small chapels. They held masses every 40 minutes.
From the start, the Parafia Nawrócenia Świętego Pawła Apostoła faced challenges. The biggest hurdle? Securing permission to build a proper church. The authorities repeatedly denied their requests. They even made pastoral work difficult. They seized part of the chapel and evicted the priests. Despite these obstacles, faith flourished.
Life went on despite the challenges. The community established vital groups. These included the Living Rosary. Caritas helped those in need. The Eucharistic Crusade drew in the youth. Even a church choir was created. In 1951, the parish was entrusted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Makeshift solutions kept the community together.
In 1952, they built a temporary altar. It stood in the chapel window. This allowed more people to participate in services. Later, they added a terrace. In 1959, a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Częstochowa was built. In 1968, another chapel honoring Saint Joseph was erected. The latter unfortunately burned down a year later. But it was quickly rebuilt. Services resumed just ten days after the fire.
Finally, in April 1976, permission arrived. The authorities granted permission to build a church. This happened 28 years after the Parafia Nawrócenia Świętego Pawła Apostoła was established. Construction began in 1978. Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński laid the cornerstone.
The Parafia Nawrócenia Świętego Pawła Apostoła was consecrated on January 25, 1985. Cardinal Józef Glemp officiated. The church’s design features a central nave. It supports a crucifix suspended between the presbytery pillars. The tabernacle made of white marble anchors the cross. Above the entrance, a steel cross is held by ten brackets. They symbolize the hands of the faithful. The church also boasts a 26-voice organ.
